Original description

Fede-ring, silver, bezel in form of clasped hands, hoop of cable pattern, Earnscleuch Water, Lauder. Caption note, February 1993: Late 15th century.//T. Deniozou note, 2011-01-28, Information taken from Glenn, Virginia, Romanesque & Gothic: Decorative Metalwork and Ivory Carvings in the Museum of Scotland, NMSE Publishing, Edinburgh, 2003: [One of] B1, C42, 41-2 [Angels, Nobles and Unicorns reference] //The ring consists of a broad flat hoop vertically split to take the ‘fede’ or clasped hands device. The hoop is bordered with spirally beaded wire and has a roughly engraved inscription against diagonal hatching. Cuffs are indicated at the wrists by two vertical ridges and the fingers are crudely cast and chased. All parts of the ring have traces of former gilding. The interior is entirely plain.//For Fede rings, see also D9.//NOTES:1 The letter forms may be intended for ‘u n i e i c n’ and were probably used purely decoratively by an illiterate craftsman.//2 PSAS, vol LV, 1921, 14-20, part of a collection formed by Lady John Scott of Spottiswood, mostly of Berwickshire archaeology.
