Original description

Urquhart Castle. [One of] Collection of relics found during the restoration of the Castle by H.M. Office of Works - see Register for 1923 pp.53-63 and Loan Register 1923. 5-140. PSAS 112, 1982, 465-476. Crossbow nut, made from a section of antler and probably turned on a lathe. For fuller descriptions see MacGregor (1976) and Credland (1980) where it is described as medieval or early post-medieval. The nut would have sat in a recess in the top of the crossbow stock, secured by strands of catgut through the perforation. Caption note, February 1993: 16th century.
