Archaeology Notes

NJ16NW 4 1087 6914. (NJ 1087 6921) Stone Coffin containing Human Remains found AD 1860. OS 25"map, (1905) During the excavations made by H W Young he found that various parts of the fort had been used for burials. He found many burials especially under the ramparts of the lower fort. These graves were specially marked by large square stones torn from the ramparts for head stones, but rude and unhewn, and standing on end. In every case a small number of smooth white pebbles were found, sometimes five or seven, but never more, usually arranged to form a cross. Under these were generally bits of very rusty iron below which, at a depth of a further foot or two were decayed human bones. One or two stone coffins were found about 30 years ago in the floor of the fort and one on the flagstaff hill. H W Young 1899. Area NJ 1087 691 . The sites of these burials cannot be ascertained. The site already published on OS 25" map, probably refer to one of the stone coffins found in the floor of the lower fort. Flagstaff hill (NJ 1083 6917) is now surmounted by a coastguard look-out post. In the small museum in the harbourmaster's office, Burghead, are a few small pieces of iron (no acc. number) possibly some of the pieces referred to by Young. Visited by OS (W D J) 16 September 1963.
