Original description

VIKING PERIOD. Bronze scabbard-head or mounting of head of quiver. No. I, Ballinaby, Islay. Anon notes, '(Tip of Drinking-horn)'. Fraser Hunter note, February 1995: The residual organic material inside the tip of the horn was examined microscopically by Theo Skinner (C&AR), 31.1.95. Without SEM examination, certainty is impossible - however, the material is most likely to be horn, as it has the visual characteristics of horn, and none of the characteristics of wood.
