Original description
Iron battle-axe, 5.3" across slightly curved cutting edge, 6.3" long, the upper and lower edges concave and narrowing to 1.5" across at minimum in front of socket; spur projections on lower edge of socket, one damaged; socket 1.3 x 0.95", damaged at the back. [Scran caption record] BATTLE-AXE (HEAD) FROM TILLYCHIN, LUMPHANAN, ABERDEENSHIRE Ref: H.IL 727 INTRODUCTION - This iron head of a battle-axe was found at the farm of Tillychin at Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire. The farm is 'near Macbeth's cairn where a battle was fought in 1056', but the axehead dates from the 14th century. DESCRIPTION - The axe-head has a thick neck. DETAILS - Date: 14th century.
