Archaeology Notes

NT60NE 13 6993 0985. NT 697 100. A circular cairn, 36' in diameter and 5' in height, is situated 300 yds E of NT 61 SE 21. It is said to have been surrounded by a circle of stones 170' in circumference. It was excavated in 1929 (F S Oliver 1929) when its structure was shown to be similar to NT 61 SE 21, but the stones of outer covering were much larger and had been carefully overlapped. Inside the cairn, there was a circle of stones, about 6'6" in diameter, covered by larger stones and enclosing fragments of unburnt bone and five pieces of a Bronze Age Beaker. The beaker, of (?) Clarke's N2 type, was donated to the NMAS, (Acc No: EQ 393) (RCAHMS 1956; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1931 (Donations); D L Clarke 1970). This cairn is now visible as a grass-covered mound, 0.6m high, 550m SE of NT 61 SE 21. Visited by OS(RD) 21 February 1967. NT 6990 0983. No change to previous field reprot. Visited by OS (IA) 17 July 1973. NT 6993 0985. Situated on a small natural eminence is a cairn, which survives as a grass-covered stony mound 10.5m diameter and 0.6m high. Surrounding the cairn are traces of a circle of stones, 16.5m diameter, which may be the remains of a kerb. Surveyed at 1:10 000. Visited by OS (TRG) 20 September 1976.
