Archaeology Notes

NT23NE 22 c.25 38. Cairn (site of): Nothing can now be seen of the "tumulus" at Crookston (NT 248 367) from which a green- stone battle-axe (Roe's type IIIA) was recovered. The battle-axe, which is in the Chambers Institute, Peebles, (Acc No: 59) is illustrated by Chambers (W Chambers 1864) a) who states that it was found in a cist "on Bonnington farm" (NT 254 381), the neighbouring farm N of Crookston. The exact location of the site is not known. RCAHMS 1967, visited 1962; J Anderson and G F Black 1888; F E S Roe 1966 A battle-axe, 7 1/2" x 4 1/2", found at an unknown date at Haystoun (NT 258 384), adjoining Crookston, is the one illustrated by Chambers. Peebles Museum accessions have been renumbered; it is now no 61. No further information. Visited by OS (RD) 25 June 1971. The Class I axe-hammer from 'Haystoun' is held in the Chambers Institute, Peebles under accession number Pbls 5102 and has been petrologically attributed to group XXVII (greywacke from the Southern uplands of Scotland). The battle-axe from 'Crookston' that is held in the same museum under accession number Pbls 5097 is of Intermediate-Developed variant form, and has been attributed to 'near' group XXVIII (quartz dolerite from various sources in Scotland and Northern England).
