Finds of all periods from Mesolithic to Medieval have been recovered from the old land surface on Shewalton Moor (which runs from NS 3237 to NS 3336). Many of the artifacts have been found as sand-quarrying operations progress, uncovering what are presumably the remains of settlement sites (J N G Ritchie and I Shepherd 1973).
