Archaeology Notes

NR84NW 1 8224 4855. (NR 8224 4855) Cist (NR) OS 1:10,000 map, (1980) Cist, Cour: This cist was discovered in May 1961 by Mr R W Durham, Cour Farm, when working a cultivator. It was subsequently examined by Mr and Mrs J G Scott. It lies almost exactly on the 100ft contour at the N edge of a stretch of level ground which appears to be raised beach. Although the cover slab was less than a foot below the surface, there was no sign of a covering cairn. The cist measured some 0.6m by 0.4m by 0.5m internally, the longer axis lying approximately E-W. It contained the inhumed remains of a child, an Irish Bowl Food Vessel, and a flint flake. The Food Vessel is in the possession of Mr Durham, while the bones, teeth and flint flake are in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum (Acc. No: A 6114). J G Scott 1966; Mr and Mrs J G Scott 1961; J G Scott 1971; RCAHMS 1971, visited 1963. This cist is as described. The cover slab has been placed vertically as a plough marker. Surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (IA) 9 August 1973. The cover slab is now lying prone. Surveyed at 1:10,000. Visited by OS (JM) 23 February 1978.
