Archaeology Notes

NX06SW 5 0107 6023. Two bronze flat axes 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 inches long, were found about 1947 by J Sturgeon, the farmer of Glenstockadale, while digging peats on his farm. R B K Stevenson 1949 These axes are found at NX 0107 6023 in June, 1947 by Mr J Sturgeon, Glenstockadale Farm, Stranraer, who pointed out the find spot. They are now in Stranraer Museum, Acc. Nos. 1947 1 and 2. Visited by OS (RD) 19 February 1968 Type Bb. J M Coles 1971. Hoard, found during peat-digging at a depth of four feet. 239. (Biggar variant of Migdale type). Flat axe, sandy surface, chemically treated (?); length 146mm, butt 25mm, cutting edge 78mm, weight 330gms. Stranraer Mus. (1947.2). 320. (Glenalla type). Flat axe, cleaned, dished faces, slight swelling at the middle; length 169mm, butt 23mm, cutting edge 91mm, weight 390gms. Stranraer Mus. (1947.1). PK Schmidt and CB Burgess 1981.
