Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 43 unlocated. A bronze socketed axe found in sand dredged from the River Tay, is in RMS (Acc. No: DE 118.) Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1952; J M Coles 1962. (Socketed axe with rope-moulded mouth). Single find - Socketed axe, cleaned, black inside, seam hammered, short haft ribs; portion of wooden haft remains in the socket; length 73mm, mouth 27 x 32mm, cutting edge 45mm, weight 160gms. P K Schmidt and C B Burgess 1981. NMS DE 118. Bronze axe 2.9" long and 1.75" broad at cutting edge, having a rope-moulding and a plain moulding round the mouth of the socket which measures internally 1.25 x 1.05". The seams at the sides are pronounced and the loop large. NMS DE 118a. Shrunken wedge-shaped piece of wood (possibly Holm Oak) 3" long, found in the socket. Found in 1946 in a load of sand which had been dredged from the lower or middle reaches of the Tay below Perth.
