Archaeology Notes

NN70SW 8 720 040. Two socketed bronze axes, dated from the late 8th century BC, from Lundie Farm, near Doune, were donated to the Smith Institute, Stirling in 1893 by John Ferguson. (Accession nos: AK 1-2). Any association of the two axes is only presumed. J M Coles 1962. The axes are in the Smith Institute. (Acc. Nos: 250-251). (Catalogue of the Smith Institute, Stirling 1934). Visited by OS (RD) 21 October 1968. Hoard (?). Coles assumes that these two axes are a hoard; this may be supported by their similar black colour and relatively bad state of preservation. 1371. (Socketed axe of Yorkshire type). Socketed axe, relatively smooth surface, black, mouth incomplete, cracked on one face, untrimmed, haft ribs, very blunt cutting edge; length 77mm, mouth 32 x ?mm, cutting edge 47mm, weight 180 gms. Smith Institute, Stirling (A 250). 1680. (Unclassified socketed axe). Socketed axe fragment, possibly of a Yorkshire axe, black; length 72mm, cutting edge 40mm, weight 120 gms. Smith Institute, Stirling (A 251). P K Schmidt and C B Burgess 1981.
