Archaeology Notes

NO43NW 11 4162 3982. In January 1870, while gravel was being removed from a hillock at the base of Tealing Hill, 2 cinerary urns (one inverted) and a cist were found near the centre of the mound. The urns were filled with calcined bones, and lay above the cist which measured 4' x 2' and lay E-W. Within the cist was an entire male skeleton, the skull of which was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1871 by Mrs S Fotheringhame (Acc No: ET 53). One urn was situated at the E end of the cist, and the other at the W. Both were situated about 3' above it. No other objects were found. Nearby are two large stones. J Neish 1871; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1873. The possible site of these finds is at NO 4162 3982, where there is an old gravel pit. It is close to the two large stones (NO43NW 10). Visited by OS (J L D) 8 May 1958. No additional information. Visited by OS (R D) 8 December 1967.
