Archaeology Notes

NN70SW 7 c. 72 01. Two socketed bronze axes from Doune, (not necessarily associated) one of which is of the 'squat type' and the other related to the 'bag type', are in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (Accession no: B.1914.287) and the Smith Inst., Stirling (AK 8). J M Coles 1962. A bronze, socketed axe-head, upper portion of head and loop broken, found at Doune, from the Tom Scott collection, is in the Smith Institute Museum (Acc. No: 3486). (Catalogue of Smith Institute, Stirling 1934). Axe in Hunterian Museum confirmed; no further information. Visited by OS (RD) 15 July 1967. 1186. (Socketed axe: Kilkerran variant of Dowris type). Single find. Socketed axe, smooth surface, brown-black, untrimmed; length 44mm, mouth 20 x 22mm, cutting edge 36mm, weight 60 gms. Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (B.1914.287). 1684. (Unclassified socketed axe). Single find. Socketed axe, rough black and green, mouth incomplete, very short and possibly no functional socket; length c. 105mm, cutting edge 79mm, weight 500 gms.
