Original description

[MOS List, II.5.1, Death: object list by case, JAS 3.2.98. Case no.: V08 - Identity: part of community]. [One of] Grave goods from cemetery at Barns Farm: - from Cist 4: - disc bead necklace. Trevor Cowie notes, 20 February 2014: Description after Watkins 1982: Jet disc-bead necklace (FRN 162; NMAS EQ 911) 210 disc beads of jet, diameters varying from 6 mm to 11-5 mm, the mean being 9-63 mm, and from 1 mm to 3-5 mm thick (the mean being 2-47 mm). 24-7% of the beads are 10 mm in diameter and 83-3% have diameters in the range 9 to 11 mm, which suggests a fairly precisely controlled manufacture. The beads exhibit a variety of drilling techniques: cylindrical, hourglass and subconical perforations are all present. Different stages of wear can also be seen: some perforations have marked string wear, while the flat surfaces of other beads bear fresh manufacturing striations. For further discussion see Watkins 1982.
