Summary


Thin flat gold fillet, tapers towards a round terminal pierced with a hole, it has a continuous embossed beaded border and a central spine of sixteen tiny embossed flowerlets stretching from two flanking single motifs to the terminal, found in St Ronan's Chapel, Iona, 1923: Scottish, second half of the 12th century

Original description

COLLECTIONS FROM HISTORICAL SITES. Half of thin fillet of gold 7 1/16" long, tapering from 7/16" in width at the centre to 3/16" at the end, decorated with rows of small pellets, weight; alsoa small fragment of same, 11/32" x 3/16", from St Ronan's Chapel Iona. Found by staff of HM Office of Works while removing loose earth from the south east corner of St Ronan’s Church, Iona in 1923. It was folded up and wedged inside a gold finger ring of Viking type.2.
