Original description
Flat, circular brooch of silver, 2 1/4" dia. inscribed IHESVS NAXARENVS REX NAZAR. Caption note, June 1993: Origin unknown. "+IHESVS NAZARENVS REX NAZAE+". The letters are poor, but this is one of the finest brooches; the design of alternate hatched and plain triangles on the pin is repeated on the other side of the ring of the brooch - a pattern found on later brooches.//T. Deniozou note, 2011-02-18, Information taken from Glenn, Virginia, Romanesque & Gothic: Decorative Metalwork and Ivory Carvings in the Museum of Scotland, NMSE Publishing, Edinburgh, 2003: [One of] B1, C42, 41-2 [Angels, Nobles and Unicorns reference] //The flat ring brooch is complete with pin. The inscription on the front is bordered by single beaded marginal lines. The back is ornamented with reversed triangles alternately plain and hatched transversely. The pin, which is rectangular in section with a rectangular collar, is decorated on the front with similar triangles.2//NOTES:1 PSAS, vol IX, 1872, 535-7.//2 Graham Callander 1924, 164, no 2, 169.//JM
