Socket for Precious Stones. Kirkwall Cathedral. Caption note, March 1993: [One of] Four gilt bronze sockets which have contained jewels, crystals, coloured glass or miniatures, and have been nailed to some piece of church furniture - perhaps a cross, a chest, a reliquary of some kind, a portable altar, a bishop's throne, or a book. Date - about 14th century. Found in St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney.
