Description and Sources

Casual find of a steatite spindle whorl of slightly irregular annular form with flat faces and rounded edges (still bearing slight facets from manufacture). Cylindrical perforation (D 11-12mm) with some wear polish. D 32.5- 33.5mm, H 15mm, Wt 25.25g. The use of steatite (soapstone) is unusual; the nearest possible source is Portsoy.
Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 193/16) and allocated to Inverness Museum. <1>

Information from the Treasure Trove database describes a worked stone object, torus shape. Very worn with smooth sides. Possible trace of notch decoratoin Possible steatite. 33.4mm x 5.1mm 25.3g. Also a dark flint tool, blade with outer skin present. 35.5mm x 19.9mm x 8mm. Chance finds. <2>

The spindle whorl is listed under Acc. No. 2018.009 in the Inverness Museum catalogue. <3>
